Camerawork blog tasks
Blog tasks:
1) Pick three camera shots from the Doctor Who scene and explain what type of shot it is and what meanings or effect they have on the audience.
- The shot that is an extreme close-up of the electric energy supply that they used was very significant as it was emphasizing the energy and power that they used to create the experiment they did. It also successfully informs the audience that something tragic is about to happen next.
- The opening medium shot examines the character's upper body and their following actions. This highlights the fact that the character plays an important role in the scene since they start the scene with this character and seeing that the character introduces them self already to be known, it just proves the point further.
- Towards the end of the scene, the directer shows us an over-the-shoulder shot when the character is on one of their many computers trying to figure out a way to help the others with their experiment on how to call the doctor. This shot draws attention to the hard work that the character is producing to make this experiment work, which then presents the fact that this experiment might be the most significant one they have ever faced.
2) Pick one camera angle that is used in the scene and explain the effect it has on the audience.
One camera angle that was used in this scene was the high camera angle. The director used this angle in the scene to show the audience that the creation is more powerful than the people who produced it. They did this by displaying one of the characters below the high angle to make them look weak. The energy source created was made to look more powerful that anything on earth. This is proven by the wide shot they took when the audience saw the energy source went further than earth and into space. Furthermore, the whole point of the high angle was to convince the audience that their creation is influential and it would make them feel anxious about what will happen next.
3) Pick one aspect of mise-en-scene from the scene and explain what connotations are being communicated to the audience.
Lighting- The lighting in this scene started as quite normal but a bit dark at the start, in the opening of the scene, however, once the group had discussed their plan and the decision had been made on how this significant experiment was going to take place, the lights went really bright to focus on all the hard work being done to produce this experiment. Additionally, the lights went extremely bright at one point where the experiment was taking place and near the end when their plan was about to work. This emphasized the suspense of the scene and added tension towards the cliffhanger at the end.
